Rooibos Tea – a South African Wonder

Rooibos, otherwise known as Red bush is a South African plant that grows in the Cedeberg region near Cape Town. It has taken off globally and is enjoyed by people all over the world for its unique taste and benefits. This amazing plant has many health benefits to offer and is a must for the health conscious.

Health benefits:

  • It has no caffeine:  for those who enjoy a hot beverage but can’t process caffiene this is the ideal drink. It can be had at night, pregnant women and children can drink it. It’s a drink for everyone. This also means you can drink a lot of it, many people drink 6 cups a day without problems. Naturally caffiene free means no chemical processing to remove the caffeine which leaves a healthier drink.
  • Has strong anti-oxidants: these help the body fight diseases by protecting from free radical damage. The ones found in Rooibos tea are anti-inflammatory and protect against heart disease.
  • Cancer prevention: this is due to the anti-oxidants.
  • High Mineral content: contains a variety of minerals that are key for good health. These include magnesium, calcium, iron and zinc. These help a variety of body function such as nerve function, skin/hair growth and many more.
  • Improves blood circulation: an anti-oxidant in it called Chysoeriol reduces the enzyme which causes heart disease which therefor improves blood flow. Rooibos tea also lowers blood pressure and cholesterol.
  • Can improve skin conditions: applying Rooibos tea bags to the face can help a variety of skin conditions. Putting some Rooibos tea bags in your bath can also aid in skin health and make a relaxing bath.
  • Helps body absorb iron: most teas contain high levels of tannin’s which stop the body absorbing iron. Rooibos has half the tannin’s of normal tea and helps the body absorb iron.
  • Helps stomach problems: the flavanoids in Rooibos help a variety of stomach issues such as cramps and indigestion.
  • Encourage a good nights sleep: the fact that it is caffeine free and the combination of minerals it contains makes it a relaxing pre bed drink which encourages restful sleep.
  • May help relief a variety of allergy’s. Such as hay fever.

  • Drink with raw honey for added taste and health benefits
  • Try mint and lemon for added flavour
  • Make an ice tea out of it as a healthy exercise friendly drink for summer

“Despite all of these health benefits of rooibos tea, there can be a downside for some people. Since rooibos is so powerful, it can interfere with treatments for various conditions, including chemotherapy for cancer patients. Also, rooibos has shownestrogenic activities in certain studies, so it might not be a good idea to use if you have a hormone-sensitive cancer like breast cancer. Finally, if you have existing kidney or liver conditions, rooibos might be more harmful than helpful. It should be used as a preventative measure for these conditions, not a cure. Make sure you speak to your doctor before adding any new dietary elements or beverages to your normal routine, particularly one as powerful as rooibos tea!”  (Organic Facts, 2014)

10 Simple Steps to make a Healthier you in just a few weeks

We all know that the hardest part of anything is starting. Here are some simple things you can do to make you a healthier and happier person. Get yourself on the right path.

  1. Drink more water. We all have different water needs, so find what works for you. One thing that stands true is most of us are not drinking enough water and it is a vital part of good health. See previous article on how to make water delicious and even healthier :
  2. Reconsider what you drink. Cut out the sugary beverages such as juices and cool drinks. These are fully of sugars and empty calories which aren’t doing you any good. Start drinking teas, stick to one coffee a day and opt for the healthier options. See article on the amazing benefits of Green Tea :
  3. Be aware of what you are eating. Sitting in front of the tv or eating while distracted can lead to over eating and you don’t even enjoy the meal. Be aware of what food you are putting in your body, read labels, opt for the healthier choice. Healthy food can be delicious too!
  4. Get more sleep. With all our various devices and stress of modern life, most of us are not getting enough sleep. Turn off all your devices an two hours before bed time. End off your night by having a relaxing bath, reading a nice book or drinking a cup of relaxing tea, whatever works best for you. Try aim for 8 hours sleep a night. The quality of sleep before 12pm is a lot higher than after. Make sure you sleep in a dark room to ensure high quality sleep.
  5. Don’t buy or keep junk food in your house. We all are only so strong willed. If you come home from a bad day and there is junk food lying around, chances are you won’t be able to resist it. Get rid of temptation and don’t keep any. Don’t let yourself get over hungry either. When not eating for ages the temptation to over eat or eat unhealthy food is often strong.
  6. Don’t eat low fat or fat free labeled foods. These products are full of artificial sweeteners, sugars and other chemical rubbish which are way worse for your health than eating fat. In fact modern research has shown diets high in healthy fat to be good for you. Don’t fall into the hype and fear fats, those myths have been dispelled.
  7. Add more fruit and vegetables in your diet. This is an obvious one but most of us don’t eat enough of them. Find what fruit and vegetables you like and prepare them in tasty ways to make eating them more enjoyable rather than a drag. Make homemade soups with your favorite vegetables. Try making smoothies with berries which are by far the healthiest fruit. Juicing is a great way to get in more vegetables for those who don’t like eating them. See previous article on the wonders of juicing :
  8. Get in some tactical exercise. Simple things such as taking the stairs rather than the elevator. Walking or cycling somewhere instead of driving. Go for a walk. Try doing some home workouts which will take very little time out your day and go a long way.
  9. Eat a high protein breakfast. Many of us either skip breakfast or eat a sugary cereal with very little nutrition. This leads to slower metabolisms and a huge spike of appetite later in the day which can lead to binge eating. High protein breakfasts will keep you more full throughout the day and make you eat less calories throughout the day. Try having eggs as they are a great high protein and super healthy breakfast which will keep you full. See previous article on the health benefits of eggs :
  10. Get a new toothbrush. Oral hygiene is vital and we often forget to change our toothbrush as often as we should. So treat yourself to a new one and improve your pearly whites. See previous article on natural toothpaste :

Try implementing each one of these steps one day at a time and enjoy the process of becoming a better and healthier you. Start small and remember two step forwards and one step back is better than no steps forward. I hope this helps everyone, have a great Monday!

Natural Toothpaste for better Health

As with many products in our modern society, they contain poisons/chemicals which cause all sorts of side effects. Its for this reason if their is a natural route that is as effective, its normally the better route to go. Modern toothpaste contains high levels of fluoride and other nasty chemicals which are poisonous and should be avoided. So why not make your own toothpaste, simple to do and very affordable!

What you will need:

  • Coconut oil (You can get flavorless and odorless if you don’t like coconuts)
  • Baking soda
  • Peppermint oil (optional)

How to do it:

  • Mix two table spoons of Coconut Oil with two table spoons of Baking Soda in a small container till it forms a paste.
  • Add the peppermint oil (optional).
  • You can vary how much according to how much you want to make.

Why it works:

  • Coconut oil is  anti-bacterial, anti-microbial, and anti-fungal.
  • It can destroy bacteria which can lead to tooth decay.
  • Baking soda helps clean and whiten and restore the PH balance.

Another good option is MISWAK toothpaste which is made from the bark of a special tree. This can be found in most chemists but may still contain some chemicals. It is still a much better choice than commercial toothpaste.

You will never believe this about Rice

We have always been taught that brown rice is healthier than white rice. This may not be as true as many people thought. Many of the Asian countries have eaten white rice for thousands of years. You may wonder why do they eat white rice and not brown. Brown rice contains phytates and lectins which bind to vitamins and minerals in the body which stop them being absorbed.

These are found in many things such as legumes and grains, it’s how the plant evolved to protect itself from being eaten. By containing these substances that interfere with digestion, the animal or person eating the plant is less likely to eat it again, if we are to look back at ancient times. We won’t to avoid these as well as gluten, the biggest cause of digestion problems if we want to be the healthiest we can be.

Vitamin wise, white and brown rice are not that different not to mention the phytates and lectins in brown rice are stopping any vitamins being properly absorbed. So white rice ends up being the better choice, not for getting in a huge amount of vitamins but rather as a brilliant source of glucose energy which is much needed when doing exercise. White rice makes a great post workout carbohydrate source to replenish muscle glycogen.

Benefits of white rice:

  • Cheap, easy too cook and can get it just about anywhere.
  • Very easy to digest
  • A pure glucose carbohydrate source which replenishes the muscles and contains no fructose.
  • Great pre and post gym energy source

White rice unfortunately contains virtually no fiber. So make sure you are getting your fiber from fruit, vegetables and other sources. Don’t rely on rice to get in your vitamins or nutrition for the day but rather as a affordable, easy digestible, toxin free carbohydrate source to fuel your workouts and help you achieve your health and fitness goals.
